THE SEFAKO MAKGATHO HEALTH SCIENCES UNIVERSITY (SMU)

Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU) was established when the Minister of Higher Education and Training, Dr Blade Nzimande in terms of section 20 of the Higher Education Act 1997 (Act 101 of 1997), promulgated the Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU) in the SA Government Gazette no: 37658 of 16 May 2014.

 

The promulgation followed the announcement made in 2011, by Minister Nzimande, when he announced his intention to separate the Medunsa Campus from the University of Limpopo. The minister’s intention was based on the findings and recommendations of the task team that was established and led by Prof Malegapuru Makgoba, former Vice-Chancellor of University of Kwa-Zulu Natal (UKZN) and Dr Max Price, the Vice-Chancellor of University of Cape Town (UCT).

 

The Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU) is guided by the following terminology which are :-

VISION

In developing a vision for the university, the institution acknowledges a number of critical aspects which give the institution its identity. These include a focus on excellence in teaching and learning, developing research and innovation, combining clinical practice and community service and focus on a broad range of fields in the health sciences. The university also has a critical role in contributing to the transformation of the health sciences sector in South Africa while at the same time making a meaningful contribution to the needs of the community it serves and South Africa as a whole.

 

With these components in mind, the institution has adopted as its vision the following: Transforming health services through excellence and innovation

 

MISSION

The mission statement highlights that the institution provides a comprehensive range of qualifications across a broad range of health sciences fields. The mission also highlights that the institution combines excellence in teaching and learning with a focus on research and innovation with community engagement at the centre of its approach to all that it does.

 

The mission statement of the institution is as follows: SMU is a dedicated health sciences university providing professional training and education in a range of fields through excellence in teaching, learning, innovative research and community engagement.

How to Apply for the Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU) ???

Below are the Instructions to follow during the University Applications for Admissions :-

• Applications should be submitted online.
• Consent to process personal Information:

By continuing with this application, you give consent to the University to process your personal information and that the University reserves the right to verify the information provided. On the other hand, the University is committed to comply with the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPI) No. 4 of 2013 and to ensure that personal information provided is only used for the purpose for which it is intended.

• The application should be completed accurately and fully.
• The names should be the same as they appear in your identity/passport document.
• You are allowed to apply for only two study choices. The first qualification chosen will be regarded as your first choice and the other one as your second choice. You should select the qualification code and name from the “List of Values” provided.
• The residence section should only be completed if you wish to stay in the University residence.
• You should pay the non-refundable application fee of R300.00. Use your student/ID number as reference when making payment.
• You are encouraged to apply before the closing dates because it will not be possible to submit your application after the closing date.

How to Apply for the SMU Postgraduate programmes courses ???

• Applications for the 2024 academic year for all programmes open on 3 April 2023 and close as follows:-
• Friday, 28 July 2023 for undergraduate programmes
• Friday, 29 September 2023 for postgraduate programmes
• You are allowed to apply for two study choices. If you wish to apply for both under and postgraduate programmes, you should apply for them separately, and provide the required documentation for each of them. However, you only pay one application fee for both.
• You should pay the non-refundable application fee of R300.00. Use your student/ID number as reference when making payment.

 

NOTE

• Your application will not be processed if you have not submitted all the required applicable documentation mentioned above.
• If you have not submitted the required documentation within a period of two months, unfortunately your application will not be considered.
• The University receives more applications than it can accommodate and meeting admissions requirements does not guarantee admission.
• There are limited places in University residence and admission to study at SMU does not guarantee a place in residence. The places are awarded on a first come first served basis and the University is not obliged to provide a place in the residence.
• All non-South African citizens and non-permanent residents are required to obtain a study permit prior to registering as students. Applications for study permits should be submitted to the South African Home Affairs, Consulate or High Commissioner in your country of residence/origin, and it would be issued in favour of Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University and to be submitted during registration.
