THE OVERVIEWS

THE STATE UNIVERSITY OF ZANZIBAR (SUZA)

The State University of Zanzibar (SUZA) was established by Act No. 8 of 1999 of the Zanzibar House of Representatives which was then amended by Act No. 11 of 2009, and further re-amended by Act No. 7 of 2016. The latter amendment has justified SUZA to merge with other Zanzibar higher learning institutions; these are the then Zanzibar Institute of Financial Administration (ZIFA), College of Health Sciences (CHS) and the Zanzibar Institute of Tourism Development (ZIToD). His Excellency Dr. Ali Mohamed Shein, the President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council is the Chancellor of the University. The University became operational in September 2001.

Currently, SUZA consists of seven campuses that are found at equally beautiful but different locations within the islands. Six campuses are located in Unguja and one campus in Pemba Island. Tunguu is the main SUZA campus located about 12 km away from Zanzibar town. The campus is actually huge and brand new decorated with green field that offers cutting-edge infrastructure of the World standard. It gives to students a local alternative to some of the world’s attractive learning environments.

The second campus is inherited from the first Teachers’ Training College in East Africa, Nkrumah campus at Beit el Ras. This is located along the coast of the Indian Ocean 5 kilometres away from the Stone Town; Nkrumah is a unique and unparalleled campus in the region that is constantly and naturally decorated by glittering blue sea and white sand beach along the perimeter of the campus. Here, our students enjoy very enriching learning environment along with the sea breezes.

Vuga as the third campus is located in the heart of the famous and historic Stone Town. Zanzibar is proud of this campus and it is very magnificently conserved by UNESCO World heritage site that vividly manifests rich culture and history of Zanzibar and its people. Thus, Vuga campus is composed of old but well kept historic structures that are surrounded by social amenities and public offices.

STATE UNIVERSITY OF ZANZIBAR (SUZA) ADMISSION 2023/24

The State University of Zanzibar (SUZA) Opens window for Admissions in each year for all programmes which are certificate ,Diploma ,Degree ,Masters and Postgraduate programmes and below are the List of schools and the specific courses offered .check below :-

I) THE SCHOOL OF HEALTH AND MEDICAL SCIENCES

The School of Health and Medical Science has now been expanded following merging with the College of Heath Science (CHS), Zanzibar which was established under Act No. 10 of 1998 of the House of Representatives as a semi autonomous organ. Traditionally, CHS is a continuation of Zanzibar Health Training School which was established in 1838. It was officially inaugurated in 1989 aiming at providing quality health services for improving life of people of Zanzibar.

The School of Health and Medical Sciences (SHMS) aims to establish the programs designed to produce the much needed health professionals for the internal and external uses. The overall objectives of the programs within the SHMS will be to produce quality and relevant health professionals, doctors, nurses, laboratory scientists,nad pharmacists who will be able to tackle the present and future health issues.

II) THE SCHOOL OF NATURAL AND SOCIAL SCIENCES

The School of Natural and Social Sciences (SNSS) aims to produce professional Arts, Natural and Social Sciences graduates, Chemists and Environmentalists graduates. The School’s goal is to support students’ learning of the scientific approach to knowledge acquisition for the attainment of scientific based knowledge.

III) THE SCHOOL OF KISWAHILI AND FOREIGN LANGUAGES (SKFL)

The School of Kiswahili and Foreign Languages is among the schools established by the State University of Zanzibar (SUZA) since October 2012, before its emergence as the outcome of massive restructuring process started in 2012, there was the Institute of Kiswa- hili and Foreign Languages which was established in 1979. The School is located at Nkrumah Campus.

The aim of the school is to produce highly educated and trained professional teachers, specialized in Languages with Education.

The School also provides opportunities for learning Kiswahili and some of the major foreign languages which include English, French, Spanish, Arabic, German, Portuguese and Chinese. In addition, the school also undertakes research in Kiswahili and provides facilities for both local and foreign students wishing to pursue short courses in Kiswahili.

IV) THE SCHOOL OF CONTINUING AND PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION (SCOPE)

The School of Continuing and Professional Education (SCOPE) is the newly established School in the State University of Zanzibar. It is the result of upgrading the Institute of Continuing Education (ICE) established in 2004 following the University restructuring project started in 2012. Currently, SCOPE headquarters is located along the Vuga Road at Mnazi Mmoja within the Old Stone Town of Zanzibar.

SCOPE focuses on providing training for Endless Education and Expertise in various fields with a view to promoting talent for a society that is moving around at different levels. There is short training from one day to six months and a long term from one year and continuing at the level of certificate and diploma.

V) THE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS (SoB)

VII) THE SCHOOL OF AGRICULTURES (SOA)

The School of Agriculture (SOA) was formaly known as Kizimbani Agricultural Training Institute (KATI) before it was merged with the State University of Zanzibar (SUZA) in July 2019. KATI was the sole semi-autonomous Agricultural Training Institute in Zanzibar operating under the Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources and fully registered by the NACTE. The institute was legally formed in 2007 by the Act No. 5 of 2007. However, its history dates back to 1930s when its predecessor the Kizimbani Research and Training Station was established with the main obligation of providing short-term training to farmers and field officers in Zanzibar. Then, the station was expanded in terms of scope to offer agricultural technical training at the Certificate and Diploma levels in 1998 and 2012 respectively
