THE GENERAL OVERVIEWS

TSHWANE UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY (TUT)

The TUT University was formed in 2004 following the merger of three technikons. Our merger aimed at redressing the inequalities of the past by providing access to all our communities and an academic home for all our students.

In that short time, we have grown into the largest contact University in South Africa, with seven faculties offering programmes in science, engineering and technology, business and management, education, humanities and the arts.

We have been ranked by Times Higher Education (THE) in 2018 as one of the top 1000 universities globally and our programmes in engineering in the top 300. THE has also ranked us eighth in South Africa. In 2017, University Ranking by Academic Performance (URAP) ranked us as the number one University of Technology in Africa.

TUT is the largest contact University in South Africa, providing quality education to more than 60 000 students every year. The University has seven faculties and nine campuses. The Tshwane campuses are the Arcadia Campus, Arts Campus, Pretoria Campus, Ga-Rankuwa Campus and the North and South Campuses in Soshanguve. TUT also has campuses in eMalahleni, Mbombela and Polokwane, as well as service points in Durban and Cape Town.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Minimum general admission requirements for study at TUT

No person may be registered as a student in a programme of TUT, unless he or she has complied with the following :-

General admission requirements for TUT

A pass mark in English at Senior Certificate level (minimum additional language; certain programmes may require first or home language status)

Each course has its own specific admission requirements.

Prospective students should note that the admission requirements of individual programmes could change from year to year.

For some programmes, students will be required to write an admission test, which will determine whether they will be admitted to the programme, or whether it will be recommended to them that they enrol for a relevant foundation course.

Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy?

All learners are required to take one of the two subjects for NSC-G purposes

 

TUT position:

Mathematics is relevant to programmes that require a prior knowledge of mathematics; all others may only require Mathematical Literacy. (Details of what each subject entails can be determined by looking at the DoE curriculum statements, available on the DoE website).

The Faculty of Arts & Design boasts five departments, namely Fine & Studio Arts, Interior Design, Design Studies (Fashion Design & Technology and Jewellery Design & Manufacture), Performing Arts (Dance, Music, Theatre Arts (Performer), Theatre Arts (Technical)), and Visual Communication (Commercial Photography, Integrated Communication Design, and Motion Picture Production). This Faculty combines and integrates two main disciplines – a focus on engagement with and service to the business community and a focus on economic sciences. We have a strong focus on entrepreneurship, propelling our graduates to also create jobs.

FACULTIES OF ENGINEERING AND THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT

Welcome to the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment. According to the latest Time Higher Education ratings, this is one of the best faculties at any South African university to study engineering. At TUT, we aim to produce future-ready graduates through employing innovative academic and research practises that are of international standard.

We offer a portfolio of career-focused programmes that enjoy international recognition. The Faculty comprises eight departments that are based at the Pretoria Campus and one at the eMalahleni Campus. Our five Centers of Excellence, Institutes, Technology Stations and Incubators (CITSIs) are instrumental in bridging the gap between academics, industry and communities. The Technology Stations, supported by the Technology Innovation Agency (TIA), contribute significantly to the innovation agenda​, particularly in support of communities around Tshwane.​​

FACULTIES OF HUMANITIES

The Faculty of Humanities is the largest faculty at Tshwane University of Technology, comprising ten academic departments and offering more than 60 academic programmes. Under this Faculty, we have the departments of Applied Languages; Integrated Communication; Journalism; Law; Public Management; Safety and Security Management, as well as the School of Education. The School of Education has four departments, namely Department of Educational Foundation, Department of Mathematics, Science and Business Education, Department of Primary Education and Department of Technology and Vocational Education. ​

Located primarily in Soshanguve, about 30km north of Pretoria, most of the Faculty’s programmes are offered through contact education. We also have about 1 500 distance education students registered in the Department of Safety and Security Management. These students are supported from two service points, namely Cape Town and Durban. Some of our programmes are also offered at the eMalahleni, Mbombela and Polokwane campuses.
