THE WITS UNIVERSITY (WU)

Wits University ,WU is situated in Johannesburg, South Africa – a vibrant, leading commercial city on the African continent. The history of Wits is linked with mining, academic excellence, and with political and civic activism.

 

The origins of Wits University lie in the South African School of Mines, which was established in Kimberley in 1896 and transferred to Johannesburg as the Transvaal Technical Institute in 1904, becoming the Transvaal University College in 1906 and renamed the South African School of Mines and Technology four years later. Other departments were added as Johannesburg grew and in 1920 the name was changed to the University College, Johannesburg. Full university status was granted in 1922, incorporating the College as the University of the Witwatersrand, with effect 1 March. Seven months later the inauguration of the University was duly celebrated. Prince Arthur of Connaught, Governor-General of the Union of South Africa, became the University’s first Chancellor, and Professor Jan H. Hofmeyr its first Principal. Building began at Milner Park on a site donated to the University by the Johannesburg municipality.

A)UNDERGRADUATE ADMISSIONS

I)UNDERGRADUATE COURSES OFFERED

Wits offers degrees in the Arts, Humanities, Commerce, Law, Health Sciences and Sciences. The curriculum is cutting-edge and is continuously enhanced to ensure that our students and staff keep up to date with the newest knowledge from around the globe.

II)UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT FEES

We are currently not accepting walk-ins at the Fees Office. All queries should be logged here. This document will take you through the steps to log your ticket.

Tuition fees are payable for each course for which a student is registered.

Charges ancillary to tuition fees, such as charges for course notes or for excursion costs are not included in the amounts listed. Club membership fees are also not listed. These additional amounts will be reflected on the student’s fee account.

Other Costs: Students also need to budget for books, stationery and travel costs, as well as pocket money and sundry expenses.

III) How to Apply for Undergraduate programmes at Wits University ,WU?

A non-refundable application fee of R100 for South African citizens, and R700 for foreign citizens, is required. Log into the self-service portal.

Log into the self-service portal and click the Campus Finances tile. Select Make a Payment>Application fee

Deposit the exact amount into the University’s application fee account:

SHORTS COURSES AND PART TIME STUDIES AT WITS

Whether it is time to brush up on your Mandarin or you are looking to reskill or keep up-to-date with developments in your profession, with courses that range from ethics and project management to mineral economics and human resources management, Wits may have a course for you.

Our short courses cater for a diverse market, ranging from young professionals and postgraduate students to private and public service executives and working professionals.

Wits accredited courses are taught by top university lecturers or sessional lecturers. Depending on the learning outcome, candidates will earn a certificate of attendance or competence, CPD recognition points or a degree or diploma qualification. Courses vary in length from a single day to over a year, and are delivered in a variety of modes, such as evening classes, seminars, single blocks of study or block-release sessions over a year.
